When I shoot a live venue with stage lighting, I try to get there early and talk to the guy operating the lights so I can get meter readings of different spots on the stage. It also helps if your camera has high ASA/ISO capabilities. If shooting film, it may be necessary to shoot at ASA/ISO 3200, 6400, or even 12800 and push-process the film. Shooting at high ISO in digital usually introduces digital noise into the image, so a good noise reduction program, such as Topaz DeNoise or Noise Ninja may be necessary during post-processing. If you use Adobe Lightroom 3, the built-in noise reduction works very well.

on dark venues its really hard to capture/focus and light em up as well. the trick to this is scouting the place where you shoot and proper placement of off camera flash or strobist style shoot. you can do it!!! keep the passion alive and dont get frustrated
